Hypoallergenic Infant Formula
There are three main types of formula for babies -- milk based, soy based and hypoallergenic. Hypoallergenic infant formula is not usually recommended unless your baby cannot digest intact proteins found in milk or soy. Some babies, especially those born prematurely or those suffering from colic, cannot handle these proteins. They may experience rashes, respiratory distress, bloating, gas, constipation and other issues. Your pediatrician will thoroughly evaluate your baby to determine whether or not hypoallergenic formula is the right choice. If so, there are a variety of different brands from which you can choose.
One of the most popular brands of hypoallergenic formula is Nutramigen by Enfamil. The entire name of this product is Enfamil Nutramigen Lipil Hypoallergenic Infant Formula. It comes in convenient powder form and is enriched with iron. Lipil is a blend of different nutrients like DHA and ARA, which are found in breast milk and encourage healthy brain development. There are a variety of different Enfamil Lipil products for parents to choose from.
Another brand of formula you may want to consider is Similac Alimentum Hypoallergenic Formula with Iron. This formula is hydrolysate-based and the protein contained within is broken down into very small pieces which are easy for babies to digest. It has been shown that this formula may begin to alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms of colic in as little as 24 hours. Of course how each baby responds to a particular formula may be different. When your baby is born if you have chosen to bottle feed he or she will probably be started on a milk based formula. If problems arise your pediatrician may recommend a switch.
Switching from traditional formula to hypoallergenic infant formula is usually quite easy and causes your baby no distress. These formulas are meant to be easily tolerated by your baby's system and readily accepted as far as taste is concerned. Most of these formulas do not contain lactose or sucrose, two elements that some babies experience allergies to. However they are still sweet enough for your baby to enjoy drinking them. If you have questions about choosing or switching your baby's formula, speak to your pediatrician. He or she can tell you what the best formula for your baby is based on their symptoms and health profile.
