Prosobee Baby Formula
In 1965 Mead Johnson introduced Prosobee baby formula to the public. This formula was the first soy protein isolate variety, made for infants intolerant to lactose. This formula is not only lactose free but also sucrose free. Often when a baby is lactose intolerant they are also sucrose intolerant. Even if your baby is not sucrose intolerant you may choose not to feed them sucrose as it is a sweetener. Prosobee has been tested and studied extensively in a clinical environment and has been deemed an acceptable milk based formula substitute.
Because Prosobee contains no sucrose, lactose or milk it may alleviate discomfort and gas. The level of carbohydrate sweetness in this product is very similar to lactose, however, which is the carbohydrate contained in mother's milk. Studies show that this formula is easily digested and readily accepted by most formula fed babies. According to the Institute of Medicine, Prosobee contains a level of choline very close to the level of choline contained in breast milk. Choline is a nutrient which plays an important role in the development of the brain.
This formula is available in three varieties -- powdered, liquid concentrate and ready-to-feed liquid. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type. While ready-to-feed is certainly the easiest because it requires very little preparation, many parents choose powder or liquid concentrate due to its lower cost. Before feeding your baby any kind of formula always make sure you have thoroughly cleaned and dried the bottle. Powdered and liquid concentrate will require the addition of water. Ask your pediatrician whether or not you should sterilize the water by boiling it before adding it to the concentrate or powder.
Prosobee baby formula, like all baby formulas, should be prepared according to package directions and not kept out longer than one hour. While it can be refrigerated for 24 hours it should not be used after that. Freshly prepared formula should ideally be fed to your baby immediately. The concentrated powder and liquid, when left sealed in a cool dry location, can last for a long time before expiring. On the Mead Johnson site you can read more about Prosobee.
